<p>Chichibu Hanyu Ichiro’s Malt “The Peated” 2010 #3308-6700, Single Malt Whisky, Japan, 70clTasting Note:NOSE:Balancing peat with honeyed notes and ripe forest fruits. Fresh and clean, elegant smoke, brine, and grassy notes. PALATE:Initial zing with a touch of citrus oil, evolving into smoked bacon and cigar box, with sweet malt. Elegant, creamy texture, vanilla, brine, white peach, apple, and aromatic spices. FINISH:Bonfire and oak spice. Soft, delicate smoke, and white fruits.Distilled in 2010 using heavily peated Scottish malted barley (59.6 ppm phenol level). Bottled in 2013 at cask strength (53.5% ABV), as a 3-year-old expression. The use of peat gives notes of smoky bacon and bonfire smoke. Bottle #3308 of 6700 produced. Matured in a combination of ex-bourbon casks, Port pipes and oak puncheons.Critic’s Tasting Note:”NOSE: Very fresh notes, close to a tequila or a mezcal, less sweet. Notes of spray, salt, iodine. It’s very maritime. Very pungent, as if there was a hint of mustard. Liquorice is also very present on the nose, accompanied by a little lemon. Grass, cereals … It’s a very characteristic nose of a (very) young whisky.TASTE: Very invasive. Smoke and the freshness of liquorice. Against all odds, some notes of fruit also: pear, apricot, lemon. It is very iodized and salty, with more notes of pepper and clove. The peat is reflected here by notes of cold tobacco and tar. Although perfectly balanced, this is a pretty amazing mix.FINISH: Salt, iodine, and some notes of white fruit. The persistence is good and the aromas pleasant.
