ORGANIC / VEGAN / NATURAL

Another beautiful example of skin-contact wine from Domaine Durrmann, this time in the form of a bright bubbles that is crafted with care and attention to detail. A blend of both macerated and direct-press Pinot Blanc – combined with a dash of Pinot Gris – grown on Schistes soils. This is somewhere between a Pét-Nat and a more traditional fizz – the juice ferments in the bottle but it’s also disgorged to get rid of the sediment. A bright orange colour in the glass: it’s bursting with flavours of quince, apricot and red apple skins; with a chalky minerality and pronounced savoury notes of dried thyme and bay leaf. Zero dosage keeps the acidity bright and fresh, and the tannins are very soft and well-integrated. All in all this is an outstanding, intense, complex sparkling wine, despite the tricky 2022 vintage.

Located in the charming village of Andlau in Alsace, the Durrmann family has been producing organic wines from their ancestral home since 1979, with son Yann taking over the reigns last year. They firmly believe in the quality of their grapes and terroir, and aim to preserve this quality with minimal intervention in the winery, employing natural production techniques such as the use of native yeasts and low-to-no addition of sulphur. Part of the production is vinified in stainless steel while the rest is aged on old wooden casks. This results in wines that are balanced, precise, and elegant, with a purity and depth that can only come from careful natural winemaking.

Origin: Alsace, FranceVintage: 2023Grape varieties: Pinot Blanc, Pinot GrisFood pairings: Apéritif, Pork, Seafood, Curries, Thai foodBottle size: 75clABV: 11%
