Dönnhoff Kreuznacher Krötenpfuhl Riesling Trocken Grosses Gewächs, Nahe, Germany, 2023Grape: 100% Riesling, 1.5ha vineyard on quartzite gravel soil, 20-40 year old vines, hand harvested, 49hl/ha yield, unoakedProducer Tasting Note:The Krötenpfuhl is a stone wine. Spicy aromas rise from the glass, with wet pebbles, even fresh hops and perhaps a little pear peel. For Helmut Dönnhoff, the 2023 is “a light, dry Riesling that is based more on spice and substance than on fruit”. In fact, it looks slim and elegant. Unique, with its notes of green curry and anise.Critics’ Tasting Notes:”The 2023 Riesling Bad Kreuznacher Krötenpfuhl comes from the steep south-facing part of this site of poor gravel and quartzite. Due to dryness in 2022, this was not made as a GG last year; however, 2023 provided sufficient moisture so the GG could be made again, exclusively in stainless steel. The nose has the slightest hint of smoke, arranging itself beside restrained citrus freshness. The palate hones in on that citric, lemony note. This is mouth-watering, bright and beautifully ripe on a slender, almost sinuous but contoured body. (Bone-dry)” Drink 2028-2060(94-96/100) points, Anne Krebiehl, VINOUS, October 2024″This is like a whole garden of fresh herbs bathed in morning dew plus a touch of fully ripe gooseberries. This starts quite round and very silky on the medium-bodied palate, then the energy and structure gently build to a serious crescendo. Fantastic harmony right through the very long finish.” Drink from release96/100 points, James Suckling, 2024Dönnhoff Krötenpfuhl Riesling Trocken Grosses Gewächs, Nahe, Germany, 2023
