Guidalberto Tenuta San Guido, Toscana IGT, Italy, 2022Grapes: A blend of 60% Cabernet Sauvignon with 40% Merlot, limestone/clay soil rich in marl & pebbles, hand harvested, aged 20-25 months in mostly French (40% new) and American oakFirst produced in 2000, Tenuta San Guido’s Bolgheri “Bordeaux blend” is made for drinking younger than Sassicaia, but still with the potential for long ageing. Embracing a younger style that seeks fragrance and sweetness on the palate, characteristics that Merlot can offer. It’s a full-bodied wine with flavours of black plums, blackberries, ground cinnamon, juniper berries, sandalwood and dark chocolate. Velvety textured tannins, finishing dry. A food wine.Critics’ Tasting Notes:”Lots of mint with sage and fresh rosemary to the currant and orange character on the nose, as well as some ripe raspberries. The palate is very refined with creamy and crunchy tannins that run the length of the wine. It shows a crunchy and energetic personality. Give it a year or two to come together, but it’s showing brightness for the vintage.” Drink after 202794/100 points, James Suckling, March 2024″Rich and well pronounced in the glass showing wet floral notes which blend well with dark, spicy traces of black cherries, dates, fondant chocolate, peppermint and juniper berries. The subtle split vine emerges in the secondary profile without being overbearing. Over time it veers towards decisive citrus sensations. Full bodied, perfectly mature tannins, less extracted and astringent than in more tense versions and a finale of optimum grace. A version which is wider than it is long which centres on the correct interpretation of the vintage. Drink now.”94/100 points, Raffaele Vecchione – WinesCritic.com, February 2024″Made with Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon, the Tenuta San Guido 2022 Guidalberto gives you a good taste of the same DNA that brings us one of Italy’s greatest wines, Sassicaia, but it’s offered in a more immediate style here (thanks to the addition of the Merlot). This warm vintage opens to medium-dark concentration and very plump aromas that take you immediately to blackberry and blackcurrant sitting out in the sun at your local farmers market. The wine shows a soft and gentle side with a pretty level of elegance transmitted through the fruit freshness and the light oak spice that is discernible here but delivered with grace.” Drink 2024-203094/100 points, Monica Larner, WINE ADVOCATE, March 2024The label depicts the Oratory of San Guido and the wine is named after the family ancestor Guidalberto della Gherardesca, an agricultural pioneer in the Bolgheri area.Guidalberto Tenuta San Guido, Toscana IGT, Italy, 2022
