Mahi Sauvignon Blanc Marlborough, South Island, New Zealand, 2023Grape: Mostly Sauvignon Blanc with a splash of Semillon, fruit sourced from 5 Wairau vineyard plots, hand picked, whole cluster pressed, only free-run juice used, partial wild yeast fermentation in steel (35%) and a small portion in used French oak (19%), 7 months’ ageing on the lees, minimal sulphurProducer Tasting Note:The focus with this wine is to provide a drink that has texture and depth, rather than focussing solely on primary fruit notes. This wine shows an array of fruit characters, ranging from green apple, cut grass and passion fruit, citrus through to tropical notes. It’s complemented by some secondary characters from the natural yeast ferments and some barrel ageing. The palate has an elegant structure with a creamy, textural mid-palate and a long finish.Critics’ Tasting Notes:”Aromas of lemon peel, passion fruit and cut grass. The palate is light-bodied with a tightly wound acidity and generous texture, giving notes of candied lime zest, orange blossoms and slate. Nicely constructed and sophisticated. Drink now. Screw cap.” James Suckling, November 2024″The 2023 Sauvignon Blanc is green and tropical, loaded with passion fruit and honeydew melon; the palate is concentrated and juicy, and this will no doubt deeply please the cohort of Marlborough-savvy drinkers who lust after this quenching profile. Well played. 13.5% alcohol, stale under screw cap.” Drink 2024-202690/100 points, Erin Larkin, WINE ADVOCATE, December 2024Mahi, started by Brian and Nicola Bicknell in 2001, with the idea to show the individuality of the various valleys and vineyards throughout Marlborough and this focus of recognising and celebrating the diversity within the region still continues to this day with the various organic, single vineyard Sauvignon and Chardonnay wines. The name “Mahi” means “our work, our craft”Food Match: Fresh green salads, goat’s cheese, creamy seafood chowder, grilled fish with lemon butter, Thai green curry.Mahi Sauvignon Blanc Marlborough, South Island, New Zealand, 2023
