<p>This is arguably the best vintage yet of a classic Priorat from one of the region’s best and most sought-after producers, which has gained critical plaudits left right and centre. Garnacha Tinta, Garnacha Peluda and Cariñena grapes from a four-hectare plot in Porrera are fermented with full clusters and stems using indigenous yeasts in large oak foudres, where the wine matures for a further 18 months.The word ‘classic’ in the name represents Carles and Ester’s opinion that classic Priorat is made from a blend of these three varieties and some use of stems: this is Priorat as it’s meant to taste. Intense pale ruby in colour and offering a complex bouquet of ripe dark fruits like blackberry, black cherry and plum, along with notes of dried thyme and rosemary, liquorice, graphite and a signature earthiness.On the palate it is full-bodied with soft, velvety tannins that produce a pleasing grip, undercut by a refreshing acidity typical of the Nin-Ortiz style. Rich layers of dark fruit unfold as it opens up, accompanied by touches of spices like black pepper and cloves. The unique ‘Llicorella’ soil provides a pronounced minerality, adding depth and complexity, and the finish is long and lingering, leaving a lasting impression. All in all, an absolute gem, embodying depth, concentration and complexity.
