Saint Romain, Bertrand Ambroise, Cote de Beaune, Burgundy, France, 2020Grape: 100% Chardonnay, calcareous marl with clay soils, 35 year old vines, organic, hand harvested, 45hl/ha yield, 12 months’ ageing in French oak barrels (40% new),Producer Tasting Note:Its robe is a very light, shiny yellow. Lovely honeyed nose of blossom, beautifully clean in its scent, with notes of citrus apple, butter, cinnamon and honey. The taste is medium bodied with a balanced combination of fruit acidity, mineral (flint type) and flavour intensity.Critic’s Tasting Note:”Attractive hint of reduction on the nose. Zesty, orange-box notes. Very St-Romain. Fine acidity keeps everything fresh and lively.”15.5/20 points, Andy Howard MW, Jancisrobinson.com, January 2022The estate at Premeaux-Prissey, a small village near Nuits-Saint-George, has been in production since the 18th century and has been farming organically since 2013. Bertrand and Martine Ambroise have handed over much of the day to day running of the estate to their children, François and Ludivine. The estate style is one of rich, opulent whites and full-bodied, powerful reds that age spectacularly. Around 12 years ago Bertrand dug up the Pinot on this plot and replaced the vines with Chardonnay. The Chablis-like soil of the plot leads to a wine which is rich, not too much oak with a beautifully fresh balanced acidity.Food Match: Serve at 10 to 13°C. A wine that will go well with fish dishes, soft cheeses such as a Brillat Savarin, or white meats and poultry with a light sauceSaint Romain, Bertrand Ambroise, Cote de Beaune, Burgundy, France, 2020
