<p>100% Australian Single Malt aged in a range of Australian Red Wine casks made from French oak.</p><p><em>David Vitale </em>left the corporate training software market in 2007 to launch his vision for a uniquely Australian Whisky — <em>New World Whisky Distillery</em> in Melbourne. Shortly thereafter he developed his first brand to fulfill that vision, and he named that brand <em>Starward</em>. Early-stage funding for the project came from Diageo’s in-house funding division — <em>Distill Ventures</em> — and they were able to build their own production distillery in 2016 located in an old airplane hanger. And while Starward began as a producer of Malt Whisky, he has since expanded to a range of Whiskies and bottled cocktails that have taken Down Under by storm.</p><p>Starward started with Australian Single Malt, and their latest release is called <em>Left-Field.</em> it is their signature Single Malt that has been aged in a variety of <em>Red Wine barrels</em> from the Barossa Valley near Adelaide and the Yarra Valley near Melbourne — both famous Wine producing regions in the south. The French oak barrels previously held<em> Shiraz, Pinot Noir, </em>and<em> Cabernet. </em>And as you would expect, this yields a<em> strongly fruit-forward dram</em> with plenty of berry notes and distinct florals.</p><p><u>Smartass Corner:</u><em>There is an expression — something is said to “come out of left field” when it is surprising or unexpected.</em></p>
